Greed makes a man do many things which are not required or sometimes we 'assume' that they were not required to do. A common example of this which most of us encounter is 'Shopping'. You may categorize it as window shopping, virtual shopping or actual shopping. Recently, I was a victim of such virtual shopping for which I am thankful for myself that देरसेही सही my greed ultimately landed me in a place which I love or knew that I would always love.
'Amazon Prime Videos' was that place for which I always vouched for! Missed a chance to subscribe it last year when Amazon's yearly subscription was Rs 499/- which currently is Rs 999/-. I had to order only 1 thing from Amazon but final cart had 4 items just to ensure shipping charges are not levied. So do away with the हमेशा का नाटक of shipping charges, I opted for 1 month's free trial of Amazon Prime. Post that, I knew what I had to do. A teaser of 'Mirzapur' had blown my mind and nothing else could come to my mind apart from watching this Web Series. The impact of 'Inside Edge' was already fresh in my mind and I knew that the producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani won't disappoint me this time too.
Apart from the teaser, the cast is what attracted me towards watching this series. Almost everyone had impressed me here and there, be it via Art cinema or short films or small yet distinguished roles in mainstream cinema. Those who have seen and liked 'Gangs Of Wasseypur (1 & 2)' will surely love 'Mirzapur'. I won't be a spoiler to share the entire plot, the crispy dialogues or the steamy scenes. What I would like to share is about the starcast of it and what magic those people have created in Mirzapur.
I shall begin with the most respected person in this series who is:
Pankaj Tripathi:
A very down to earth person hailing from a small village of Bihar but with abundant talent. Another talent of NSD. He started his career in 2004 but it took 8 long years for Bollywood and its audience to notice him in 2012's Gangs Of Wasseypur (and its sequel) and then there was no looking back for him. Wikipedia says he has worked in more than 40 films and 60 television shows which is quite astonishing. You check the list of his movies and most of them will be low budget but movies of different taste.
The cool and composed 'Kaaleen Bhaiyya aka Akhandanand Tripathi' portrayed by him is simply fabulous. It's now he is being seen in notable movies like Fukrey, Stree, Newton etc.
After spending 15 years in Bollywood, a person of his caliber received his 1st award in 2017 followed by another in the same year. (1) Special Mention at the National Film Awards for Newton (Hindi) and 2)
News18 REEL Movie Awards for Best Supporting Actor for Newton).
You can watch some of his coolest interviews on YouTube at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yotCyfbVmRs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syW_FNdnoL8&t=97s (do watch all the videos of this interview)
(Dear Bollywood, please don't behave like our Corporate World. Kindly recognize and applaud the real talents on time!)
Ali Fazal:
From essaying a role of a slim, demotivated 'Joy Lobo' in '3 Idiots' who commits suicide later to a macho and dashing 'Guddu Bhaiyya aka Guddu Pandit' who doesn't hesitate shooting anyone right from his debut with gun. What an alteration for a role!! Gaining weight and maintaining a very nice built for the role, to enter with a fake name and wrestle with locals in Banaras and get injured, to enjoy checking out 'Guns' at various gun shops in Lucknow and learning different fighting techniques from the local goons. This man has come a long way. You will totally forget all his past innocence of 3 Idiots of say of Fukrey.
Since he remains alive at the end (Opps!! I spilled some of the beans!), it will ensure that the sequel will be more interesting.
Divyendu Sharma:
Similar to Ali and his past roles, it's a dream come true role for Divyendu. His blend of machoism and rustic look in bringing 'Munna Tripathi' in front of audience is seriously commendable. After playing the second fiddle in 'Toilet Ek Premkatha' or the over-used, दिल टूटा आशिक- Liquid of 'Pyaar Ka Punchnama' he showed his humerous side in 'Batti Gul Meter Chalu'. However, audience can never imagine him in the role of Munna Tripathi and his overall hooliganism he does in the series.
We ought to say that 'Liquid' has become pretty 'Solid' in Mirzapur!
Vikrant Massey:
Another talented actor who made his television debut in 2004. A known face of many commercials and after doing some small roles in Lootera or getting hidden among the crowd of of big stars of Dil Dhadakne Do, he creates his own identity for himself through 'Babloo Bhaiyya aka Babloo Pandit' in Mirzapur. His facial looks and overall mannerism soothes you. If you don't trust this line of mine then watch his short film 'Detour' also featuring another nice but not yet much acclaimed actress Sayani Gupta. Don't go on the name of his character as it may sound like 'Pappu' but his role isn't Babloo. A younger brother of Guddu who has the headstall of Guddu to some extent under his control but when it loses from his hand, the story takes a different turn.
Farhan didn't forget Vikrant's small role used by Zoya in DDD and thus, gave a very meaty role for him in Mirzapur which is simply appreciable.
बेचारेको मारना जरूरी था क्या? ;)
Shweta Tripathi:
A good actress who looks much younger than her actual age. The fact which was tactically used in 'Haramkhor' where she played a 15 yr old student falling in love with our poor 'Ganesh Gaitonde'!
Anyways, in Mirzapur, she is 'Golu aka Gajagamini Gupta' who to some extent is similar to Babloo for her sister Sweety Gupta played by Shriya Pilgaonkar. Apart from Haramkhor, she also showed her acting prowess in 'Masaan'. A natural tinge of husky voice, confident acting and selection of different roles makes her an actress of another league.
I am sure 'Golu' will achieve bigger goals in Mirzapur-2 as there won't be 2 important characters in the sequel who will eat her footage :P
Rasika Dugal:
Her 'Beena Tripathi' won't disappoint you for sure. My 1st encounter with Rasika was through a television serial 'Dariba Diaries' (Zeenat) where I liked her acting. Later she won my heart yet again in a uber-confident role of short film 'Chutney' along side Tisca Chopra. It's very promising to see that actresses like her chose various challenging role and portray them with such an ease that hardly any of the mainstream actress can do such roles.
The way 1st season has ended, Beenaji surely has a scope to take her revenge in some way or the other in 2nd season!
Sheeba Chaddha:
No, even though she resembles Ila Arun, she isn't the twin sister of Ilaji!
Sheeba is a very well-known face on YouTube. She started her career in 1998 with 'Dil Se'.
One must say that she has acted as usual Dil Se in Mirzapur as 'Vasudha Pandit'. Her recent role in Badhaai Ho would be a stark contrast of what she plays in Mirzapur. She shows that age is not bar and one can do any damn roles at any age. Don't believe me?? >>>> YouTube Plz!!
I do wish that her poor husband is able to change her nature in 2nd season :D
Amit Sial:
I noticed him prominently in 'Inside Edge'...another masterpiece of Amazon Prime. He is also a seasoned actor with a fate similar to Pankaj Tripathi who chooses films of different genres and ensures that he maintains versatility.
Similar to Vikrant, Farhan again uses Amit after Inside Edge to a good extent. Although his role may look small but Amit makes his presence strongly felt.
" मौर्या साहब, इतनी Late Entry काहे लिये बे "
Shriya Pilgaonkar:
"Sweety Gupta" does appear sweet to me for many reasons. Firstly because she has thankfully chosen non-diabetic path far away from her genes!
Secondly, no MTI (a rare thing for a marathi actress/actor) and a pleasant appearance throughout on the screen.
" हम सोचे रहे के Sweety का बबुआ बदला लेगा .... मुन्नाभैय्या, काहे ऐसा किया बे? "
Other actors like Rajesh Tailang, Harshita Gaur or veteran actor Kulbhushan Kharbanda have also played their roles very well.
One might dare to say that ""मिर्झा गालिब" के वो दिन थे...... अब दिन आ गए है ' मिर्झापूर ' के!!"
Those who have already seen and loved the Season-1 of Mirzapur, let's enjoy the second season which may be out in March next year!
